Matthew Centrowitz, at 22, Gets Better and Better

Matthew Centrowitz, 22, was the 2011 IAAF World Championships 1500 meter bronze medalist and placed fourth in the 1500 at the 2012 London Olympics. He set his 1500 meter personal best of 3:31.96 this summer. On Saturday, he won the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York in 3:52.4, with Bernard Lagat second. Centrowitz won the NYRR Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in February. In 2011, he won the 1500 at the NCAA Championships and USATF Championships while a University of Oregon undergraduate at the time.
He is the son of Matt Centrowitz, a 1976 U.S. Olympian in the 1500 and later the American record holder for 5000 meters. Young Centrowitz is now coached by Alberto Salazar.
