May 17-20 Mile Guide
By Bring Back the Mile
While we did not have any major Mile news, we do have to give two great performances their due at the Metric Mile distance. First, at the Samsung Diamond League Meet in Doha last week, Oregon Track Club's Russell Brown grabbed the Olympic "A" standard at 1500 meters with a personal record and U.S. leading time of 3:34.11. And then this past Monday evening at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet, Columbia University's Kyle Merber shocked the collegiate world with a seven second PR and American collegiate record winning the 1500 meters in 3:35.59 (FloTrack video).
So, how do we follow that up? In the professional ranks we kick things off on Thursday evening in Minneopolis with the Medtronic TC USA 1 Mile Road Championships. Then on Friday night out west in the City of Angeles, the Oxy High Performance Meet does not disappoint with a who's who of American Milers toeing the line in the 1500 meter races, including U.S. Mile record holder Alan Webb. World Champ Jenny Simpson is featured at 800 meters.
But, there's plenty more to check out this weekend coast-to-coast from the Wilbur Duck Mile in Syracuse, NY (May 18), the Congress Avenue Mile in Austin, TX (May 19) and the Heart & Sole Festival of Miles in Santa Rosa, CA (May 20). There's something for almost everyone out there, so make the trip, test your limits and break your own personal Mile barrier!
