April 24-28 Mile Guide

April 24, 2012

By Bring Back the Mile

The Mile action begins this week tonight in Des Moines, IA with a fast field set for the 3rd Grand Blue Mile, part of Drake Relays Week. Team USA Minnesota athletes, Gabriele Anderson (4:31.05) and Heather Kampf (4:30.95) who finished third and fifth in 2011 will take to the streets of Des Moines again battling some of America's best. Then two of the biggest Track & Field events of the season highlight the weekend with the 103rd Drake Relays and the granddaddy of them all, the 118th Penn Relays. [Editor's Note: Gabriele Anderson was a late scratch from the Grand Blue Mile due to food poisoning; she should recover to run the 1500 on Saturday.]

Also this weekend, 2011 World Champion at 1500 meters, Jenny Simpson, will make her season debut at the Drake Relays on Saturday in the Women's 1500 meters (we sure do wish it was a Mile). Stay tuned for more information on scheduled participants as we get them.

Out west, NCAA Indoor Mile record holder in the Mile, Miles Batty, will attempt to become only the second person to go under four minutes in the state at the Clarence Robison Invite on Saturday. Doug Padilla, a two-time Olympian and BYU graduate, is the only one to-date, running 3:57.23 in Provo in 1983

Finally, to cap off the week, fast fields are assembled in the 1500 meters at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invite on Sunday evening in Palo Alto, CA where some of America's top Milers will be toeing the line in the Metric Mile distance.
