Manzano urges athletes to ‘continue on’ with passion for running

2012 Olympic 1500m silver medalist inspires at USA Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships opening ceremonies

U.S. Olympian Leo Manzano on Friday night urged athletes competing in a national cross country meet in San Antonio to “continue on with your passion and joy in running, or in whatever you want to do.”

The former University of Texas star made his remarks at Shamu Stadium at Sea World, where opening ceremonies were held for more than 3,500 athletes in town for the USA Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships.

The meet kicks off Saturday morning at the National Shooting Complex.

Manzano grew up in Mexico, moved to the Texas Hill Country in 1989 at age 4 and then went on to become a standout distance runner at Marble Falls High School.

While in college at Texas, Manzano became a star.

He won NCAA titles indoors and outdoors and broke the school record in the Mile.
