Mile Maven Seeks to Restore Event’s Onetime Magic
Backers say the distance resonates with Americans

Santa Barbara City College’s track sits across the street from the Pacific Ocean’s sand-dappled coastline, so maybe it was the stunning setting that moved Ryan Lamppa two years ago.
Or maybe his workout released an inspiring endorphin rush. Or maybe it was just serendipitous.
Whatever the stimulus, Lamppa, 52, a Harvard grad and a man passionate about distance running, felt a calling that morning. So he created a campaign: bring back the mile.
With a move to the metric system, the distance has lost its luster in the track and field world, but Lamppa longs to rekindle America’s love affair with the mile.
