South African Mile record holder eyes Dream Mile
"The Dagbreek / Maties Street Mile is a highlight of the South African season for me. I won't miss it for anything, and hopefully I will be able to run a sub-4 minute Mile there."
From Stellenbosch University
These are the words of the current South African record holder in the Mile, Johan Cronje, on his upcoming participation in the 5th Dagbreek / Maties Street Mile. In 2013 Cronje narrowly missed out on running a dream Mile.
This year, the unique event will once again take place in the picturesque Victoria Street on the Stellenbosch campus of Stellenbosch University (SU) – on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:30pm. The street Mile is hosted in conjunction with Maties Athletics and forms part of SU's Woordfees (Wordfest).
"The race is held annually in honour of SU alumnus, De Villiers Lamprecht. He was the first South African to run a dream Mile, on November 13, 1964. A dream Mile is the Mile (1609 meters) that is covered in less than 4 minutes. De Villiers is a former resident of Dagbreek Men's Residence," explains Francois Fouché, organizer of the Dagbreek / Maties Street Mile.
