It was the weekend of Jane Hedengren.
On Thursday, March 13, the Timpview (UT) senior shattered the indoor national 5000m record. Three days later, she returned to The Armory at Nike Indoor Nationals and delivered the fastest girls Mile in high school history.
Hedengren clocked an astounding 4:26.14 to break the 4:27.97 indoor record that Sadie Engelhardt set earlier this season.
Engelhardt had run that time on the same track at the 2025 Millrose Games. She was in a field of professional runners and etched her name ahead of Mary Cain, who now sits at #3 all-time on the high school list.
Hedengren's time is not only the fastest time in indoor history, but in overall high school history as well as in a girls-only race.
NOTE: In 2014, Cain ran 4:24.11 indoors, but as a pro athlete, and in 2022, Addy Wiley ran 4:26.16 to run the fastest 1600m in HS history, which converts to a 4:27.73 Mile.
Hedengren wasted no time in jumping out to the lead. She split 1:06.11 through the opening 409 meters.
Her pace didn't fluctuate and she continued to clip 33-second laps throughout the rest of the race. Unbelievably, all but two laps fell outside of that 33-second margin. Those two laps were 32.15 and 32.63, respectively.
She was near perfect throughout her race and commanded control of the field and the crowd as they roared her forward. Zariel Macchia finished runner-up, 14 seconds back (4:40.75).
Hedengren, who committed to Brigham Young University, split 4:07.68 through 1500m en route to her historic Mile performance.
