Jenny Simpson qualifies for 1500 meters semis by less than a second

LONDON — Monument's Jenny Simpson brought some unwanted drama and suspense to the first round of the women's 1500 meters Monday, qualifying for the semifinal on Wednesday with less than a second to spare.

Simpson, the reigning world champion and a former Colorado Buff, ran from the back of a slow heat to avoid the jostling going on up front, and had to kick hard at the end to avoid elimination.

Simpson finished in four minutes, 13.81 seconds, edging Ekaterina Martynova of Russia by 0.05 of a second for the last spot in the semi.
