Virginia junior Henry Wynne captured the national championship in the men’s Mile as the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships concluded Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Wynne, who paced the field for most of the race, held off multiple challenges from Jonah Koech of UTEP and edged Blake Haney of Oregon by 0.12 to win the men’s Mile in a time of 4:06.63.
“It was an awesome race out there,” Wynne said. “It was very tactical and I tried to get out front early and not get mixed up in all of the pushing and shoving in the middle of the pack. Jonah Koech of UTEP came around me with 600 meters to go and it was a real race from there, hitting each other back and forth and sprinting as fast as possible. To cross the line in first place is an amazing feeling and I’m looking forward to more in the future.”
