Sebastian Coe: I want to lead athletics into a new era

IAAF President candidate and sport legend: "I want people to fall in love again with athletics."

Last week I announced my candidature for the presidency of the International Association of Athletics Federations, and on Wednesday morning I will unveil the details of my election manifesto, Growing Athletics in a New Age.

My decision to stand for the presidency of my sport was not taken lightly.

Of course, on one level, it was one of the easiest decisions of my life. For as long as I can remember, I have woken knowing that athletics, in some way, would shape my day. As a young boy, running was the thing that I loved beyond anything else and I have been hugely fortunate that athletics has been at the center of my life ever since.

In addition athletics has huge strength. It is truly global and remains the #1 Olympic sport.

However, I am also a realist and know that my sport faces some significant challenges which, unless addressed head on, could damage the very future of athletics in the years ahead as more and more young people are drawn to other sports and competing distractions.

The detailed proposals that I will unveil on Wednesday are, in essence, a 10-year vision for athletics and the IAAF to offer a road map to deliver growth and vibrancy in athletics at every level and everywhere. It is aspirational and ambitious and I believe it is needed.
