Southerland Has A Mind for Winning

The Cardozo senior and Millrose Mile champion has shown perfect race tactics this winter. Will her instincts pay off at nationals?

It’s no wonder that Sabrina Southerland of New York has the most consistent record of any middle-distance runner in the country this season. As she prepares for this weekend’s New Balance High School Indoor Nationals at the Armory Track & Field Center, in either the 800m or the Mile plus a couple of relays, Southerland has not only the physical strength borne of hard training but a rare emotional grasp of her opposition.          

Southerland, who captured the New York State 1500m title last Saturday at Cornell with room to spare, is a senior at Benjamin Cardozo High School in the Bayside section of Queens. An excellent student, her favorite subject is social psychology, which she says has helped her assess behavior on and off the track.
