Inaugural Bring Back the Mile Tour 2013 Ends with a Flourish

Highlights of national promotional tour of iconic distance include thrilling races and numerous meet, U.S. Junior, NCAA, course and State records; $120,000 awarded to top Milers

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – (September 12, 2013) – The inaugural Bring Back the Mile Tour 2013, showcasing 14 events nationwide, produced exciting Mile racing throughout the year including the Tour finale at the Minnesota Mile on Sunday, September 8 where Americans Ben Blankenship and Gabriele Anderson shattered course records, clocking 3 minutes, 52.7 seconds and 4:21.3, respectively, and running the fastest Miles ever in Minnesota. Bring Back the Mile (BBTM), launched in January 2012, is a national campaign to elevate and celebrate the iconic distance.

“The first Bring Back the Mile Tour exceeded our expectations, with numerous thrilling Tour event finishes and record or near record number of participants for virtually every Tour event as well as many national, NCAA, state and event records were set,” BBTM Founder Ryan Lamppa said. “The Tour events, which awarded $120,000 in prize money, and the top Milers inspired, engaged and entertained runners of all ages and abilities, the media, fans and the general public, and we look forward to bringing back the Tour in 2014 to create more Mile magic.”

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – (May 9, 2013) – Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis extended his season winning streak to eight races with a record-breaking victory at the Medtronic TC 1 Mile on Thursday evening in Minneapolis. The New Zealand native clocked 3 minutes, 56.2 seconds to break three-time Medtronic TC 1 Mile champion David Torrence’s 2011 record of 3:58.4.

In the women’s professional race, Sarah Brown of Knoxville, TN, the 2010 race runner-up, edged Canadian Olympian Nicole Sifuentes at the tape in 4:33.3, with Sifuentes stopped at 4:33.4. Defending champion Heather Kampf of Minneapolis was third (4:34.1).

Nick Willis, New Zealand’s 2008 Olympic 1500-meter silver medalist, will run the Medtronic TC 1 Mile on the roads in Minneapolis on May 9 and a 1500-meter race at the Diamond League meet in Shanghai, China on May 18.

Reigning USA Indoor mile and 3000-meter champion Will Leer, a Minnetonka native, and breakthrough steeplechaser Jamie Cheever, a Minneapolis native and University of Minnesota graduate who competes for Team USA Minnesota, will be part of the race that runs down Nicollet Mall.

The national championships are being hosted by the Medtronic TC 1 Mile to be held in downtown Minneapolis on Nicollet Mall.The TC 1 Mile, designated as the USA 1 Mile Road Championships for the last three years, features an evening of races for runners of all ages and abilities with the first race starting at 6:50pm. More than 3,000 runners are expected to participate in the eighth edition. The USA Championships will be held at 7:53pm for women and at 8:03pm for men.

The Medtronic TC 1 Mile, organized by Twin Cities In Motion, features an evening of races for runners of all ages and abilities. Action kicks off at 6:50pm and culminates with the USA Championships races at 7:53pm (women) and 8:03pm (men). In all, more than 3,000 runners are expected to compete in this exciting 8th edition. The event has hosted the last three USA 1 Mile Road Championships.
